Trip to Sri Lanka was one of my favorite and honestly I can not wait until I return back and travel more in this beautiful island. I have decided to split the trip into three parts – visit capital city Colombo , do some diving and snorkeling at Hikkaduwa and see elephants in National Park Yala.
Colombo is very busy port city.It also has a beach but you can’t compare city beach to beach on the South. I would say that Colombo displays the best and worst country has to offer! The city it’s a contrast itself with huge mansions and massive shopping malls with expensive designer brands standing next to urban slums, congested roads and street markets.
Most people use train to travel in Sri Lanka as its very popular but I decided to go for a taxi. From Colombo it took only 2 hours to get to Hikkaduwa. Reason I picked to stay in Hikkaduwa was simple. I love snorkeling and Hikkaduwa National Park is home to marine turtles and exotic fish.
Every morning I was super excited when I went to feed the huge turtles on the beach and later spent half day snorkeling in beautiful corals. The most amazing experience I’ve ever had. Swimming calmly with 4-5 turtles around me.
This area also offers huge selection of beautiful hotels but I rented a villa with private pool. Monkeys were daily visitors.Make sure you have always ready bananas for them! They are friendly.I highly recommend to use tuk tuk as it’s absolutely normal that you can see small alligators cruising in river which is quite scary.
Night life is absolutely amazing. Everything is open late, all restaurants have fresh sea food and if you make friends with local people on the beach they will take you to best party places ever. Sri Lankan people are very kind and friendly.
And finally best in the end!Last couple of days I stayed at beautiful 5 star resort Jetwing Yala. Great hotel, very close to beach with golden sand, big waves with wilderness all around you! Elephants visiting hotel throughout the day. I have booked morning and evening safari through hotel with the guide and it was amazing! I had jeep Just for myself and seen so many wild animals and again my beloved elephants!
